Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Shadow of the Erdtree is the first story expansion to Elden Ring - an action RPG from 2022. It was developed by the Japanese studio FromSoftware, the developers of the base game. The project was once again headed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the father of the Souls series and the entire soulslike subgenre.

Plot

Shadow of the Erdtree takes place in the Lands Between - the same realm as in Elden Ring. This time players get to visit entirely new regions and experience a previously unknown story. The expansion adds new bosses, gear and weapons.

Speculation

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is likely to revolve around events from the base game's backstory. If true, this would mean experiencing the story of Godwyn the Golden and Miquella, the brother of Malenia, one of the most important characters from the base game.

Mechanics

In terms of gameplay Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree doesn't differ much from the base game. The player creates their own protagonist and explores vast open areas, battling regular enemies and powerful bosses. Defeating foes is rewarded with runes, which serve both as currency and as experience.

Technical matters

Shadow of the Erdtree is not a standalone expansion. It requires ownership of the base game, Elden Ring, to play.
